September is Pain Awareness Month.  This important awareness month is sponsored by the US Pain Foundation.  As an advocate and Chronic Pain sufferer, I hope to increase awareness for those of us who live everyday with Chronic Pain.

The Pain Foundation hosts a 30-day Challenge, which you can follow on their Facebook Page.  There are 30 challenges there, one offered each day.  These small tasks help us tell others about pain.  Invisible or Visible Pain affects over 100 million Americans.  Chronic Pain is devastating and I can attest to that fact.

My chronic pain is caused by many conditions, that overlap: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Osteoarthritis, Mast Cell Activation Disorder, Chronic Migraines, and Scoliosis.  There are no easy answers for chronic pain.  Pain doctors have given me muscle relaxers to help manage my pain.  These offer some help, but now they are backing me off of this medicine because of possibility of liver damage.

There are many drugs that can lesson pain, but I've not been offered these.  I'm encouraged to use: topical gels, tens-units, exercise, physical therapy and other things to manage pain.  These help a little, but don't come close to relieving my pain.  Personally, I would rather continue using these drug-free options.  This is because the side-effects of pain meds have caused damage to my kidneys.

  1. I'm sorry to hear this, it sounds scary :( Were your kidneys damaged by meds?

    1. Thank you, Sheryl. Yes, unfortunately too many years of prescriptions have done this.
